In 1965, Pam Rohman was a happily-married mother of seven children who was "looking for something to do"! An experienced journalist, she convinced the publisher of the East Lansing, Michigan, Towne Courier that a small-town newspaper should have a regular column about family life in town. It would be light-hearted but truthful about the joys and trials of a large family growing up in that time and place. She named it "Family in Towne" and wrote under the pseudonym Kaye Naybor. (She also gave fictitious names to all the members of her family so that no one would know who wrote the column. Only a few ever guessed.) In between making meals, doing the laundry, cleaning, shopping, and shuffling kids in and out of the house on their way to and from school and school activities, she found the time to write an incredible 230 columns over eight years. Each column took up some event that was actually drawn from her family's daily life told in such a manner as to make her readers smile and say, "Yes, that's how it is (or was) in our family." Her columns tell the story of her around-the-clock on-the-job training as a wife and mother of seven. She wrote about an amazingly wide range of subjects from Christmas Past to Christmas Present, trailer trips and blimp rides, dressing kids up and dressing kids down, babies, teens and "inbetweens," April Fools' Day and Groundhog's Day, Doctor Spock and "Doctor Mom," going to Church, going to the White House, going to California, going to Europe. Her columns reveal her great love for her family, a keen and dry-eyed insight into family life at ground level, an engaging style and a richly comic imagination.
