Casting Bread Upon the Waters offers a guide primarily targeting the reader who might wish to establish or enhance a sense of communion with a higher power. This book combines scriptural interpretation with personal observation, taking into account the diverse challenges modern life offers. In addition, it covers a range of topics from the joy of the Lord, warfare, and being led by the Spirit, to carving out a place for faith in the twenty-first century.

Milton L. Cox was born and raised in a Christian home in Harlem, New York, by a woman who sacrificed much in raising him as a single parent. In spite of his Christian upbringing he began rebelling, not only against his upbringing, but also against everyone that cared anything for him. As a result of his rebellion, coupled with the negative influences of his peers, he left home at the age of seventeen and chose the path of gangs, crime, and drugs for an additional seventeen years. This eventually led to his incarceration, beginning with Rikers Island and continuing at the Brooklyn House of Detention; Providence, Rhode Island; Newbedford, Massachusetts; Boston, Massachusetts; and then Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he finally met the Lord Jesus Christ, along with his lovely wife, Mariah Cox. In the year 2000 he became the program director of the very place where he sought help for his addiction. After working there for fifteen years, he became sick and was diagnosed with kidney failure. As a result of his illness and unemployment, he and his wife moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. The adjustment was difficult, and many times he felt discouraged and bitter, thinking his preaching and traveling days were over, until one evening while in bed God told him to get up and write. When finished he asked God, "Why are you asking me to do this?" and he said, "All the things that you've learned from me in your times of afflictions, gather them up and place them in a book." When he asked God, "What shall I name it?" he answered, "Casting Bread Upon the Waters."
