Synopsis

Julian and Annie have only just announced their forthcoming marriage, when Annie's twelve-year old son Dan mysteriously fails to come home from school. Despite an extensive police investigation, the days turn into weeks and it is as if he has vanished into thin air. Over the next three years, Annie refuses to give up hope that somewhere her son is alive and will one day return home. Julian, meanwhile, can't help but yearn for Annie to put the past behind her and move on.

Then, out of the blue, a call from Glasgow brings shocking news of Dan's fate. And far from being over, it seems the mystery of his disappearance is only just beginning...

Review

'A masterful thriller from Rebecca Frayn in the vein of Zoe Heller's Notes On A Scandal' --Sunday Express

'Gripped me from the very first moment that I picked it up  and I felt compelled to keep reading until I was able to find out what  had happened. It's the sort of book that as soon as you think  you can see where it might be going it takes a quite unexpected turn and that is one of the reasons why it is so absorbing...  What made Deceptions even more compelling is that  alongside the mystery and suspense there is also the human tragedy and  the desperation of a family that is disintegrating...  A truly gripping read that had me hooked from the first page... A book  that you will feel glad that you have read' --Bookbag (blog)

'Pretty much from page one of this book, I was hooked... sparsely and tightly written... I read this book in a day... Highly recommended' --Reading Matters (blog)

'Deceptions tells the tale of every parent's worst nightmare -- your child suddenly goes missing. In this harrowingly realistic portrayal, we follow the psychological meltdown of the fraught mother as she desperately looks for answers, blames herself and those around her and ultimately realises how little she actually knew about her son... An emotionally intense read' --Madhouse Family Reviews (blog)

'Rebecca Frayn's tale about Dan, who goes missing as a 12-year-old but then turns up three years later, reminds me of Janice Galloway's observation that plot is a bribe to keep the reader reading. As Annie, Dan's mother, unravels, we watch on from the point of view of Julian, her oddly austere partner. Julian works in the art business, much concerned with forgeries and copies, so when the older Dan turns up, he is attuned to tell-tale differences between the younger and older versions. And so a story which asked "Where is Dan?" moves on to ask "Is this him?" Shameless bribery all the way, but it works. I couldn't put it down'
--Independent on Sunday
