Synopsis
Returning to Pretoria where he grew up, Harry van As finds himself in a state of limbo. So many things have changed; so many are still the same. His friends are certainly not those he grew up with: a striking Nigerian schemer, a mathematician-turned-New-Ager, a young black insurance broker and a gay architect. In this novel of shifting surfaces, Harry rekindles a relationship with an old varsity flame and encounters a Pretoria sculptor who works with the unusual medium of glass. Yet his mind constantly returns to another existence - a life in Cape Town, a terrible accident, a mysterious loss. As the shards of Harry's life come together, the reality around him fragments. A picnic at the giant meteor crater on the outskirts of the city brings his quest to a head: he discovers the door through which to enter, and to exit.
