Synopsis

Mary ("Mamie") Dickens (1838-1896) was Dickens' eldest daughter. She remained with her father until his death in 1870, taking second place to her aunt, Georgina Hogarth, as housekeeper and companion, and living with Georgina afterwards. She collaborated with Georgina in the editing and publication of the three volumes of Dickens' "Letters"published in 1880. Mamie provides a first hand account of life with the "inimitable Boz" and his influences on family and friends, and designed this book to appeal to the young. Book Description

This loving account of Charles Dickens (1812–70) as a father, written by his favourite daughter Mamie, was published shortly after her own death in 1896. It gives an idyllic - perhaps too idyllic - account of daily life with the great novelist, both before and after his separation from his wife.

About the Author

Mary 'Mamie' Dickens (6 March 1838 – 23 July 1896) was the oldest daughter of English novelist Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine. After her parents separated in 1858 Mary became the official hostess at Gads Hill Place in Kent, Dickens's country home, staying with her father for the rest of his life. She wrote a book of reminiscences about her father, and, with her aunt Georgina Hogarth, edited the first collection of his letters.
