Synopsis

Emma - youngest daughter of Henry Wodehouse, gentleman of Highbury in Surrey - is happy, handsome and rich, with a tendency to matchmaking rather in advance of her twenty years. Now that her governess Miss Taylor has found a husband, Emma lacks a companion. she "adopts" Harriet Smith - pretty, seventeen and frivolous - and launches her at the eligible Rev. Elton, who is thinking of proposing to Emma. Emma thinks herself loved by Frank Churchill, but there is also the question of the lovely and enigmatic Jane Fairfax. This scene of young love is watched over by Mr Knightley, the only person who can see in Emma all her faults and virtues. From this comedy of misunderstandings Austen distils a work which reveals through brilliant irony the way the mind is misled by hidden desires.
