Few knew that the legendary Desert Rider was really a Texas Ranger who found it practical to conceal his identity. If they'd known, the double-crossing railroad men with whom Vane was dealing might have been less frisky. Two railroads, the M&K and the C&P were building through the Chamisal Hills. Pride as well as fortunes was at stake, and Matt Clemon of the M&K was determined that nothing should keep his line from winning out. So he sent one of his men to pose as a cattleman, figuring he could then throw a monkey wrench into the C&P without suspicion being cast on the Big Boss. However, little threads that would have meant nothing to the average man were tied together by Vane into a tight noose.
