Synopsis

Understanding how theory informs social work practice is an area that students can often find difficult to grasp. Written in an accessible style, this book introduces theory as a framework that social workers can draw upon to inform their decision-making process. Using the key skills of critical thinking and reflection, this text encourages the reader to think about the formal and informal knowledge sources they can draw upon to guide their practice.

Review

Excellent book: most welcome! Provides clear analysis, discussion as to what, how and why students can explore the important link between understanding and using theory. This is an area many social work students struggle with as it is an 'abstract' area. The book dispels this, providing clear and concise info. The book provides a contextualisation of work within the children and families area. It is often very difficult for students to have the opportunity to receive a 'broad' overview of practice within the area. This book provides this. Written from an academic and practice perspective. --Course leader, Liverpool John Moores University

Contents well organised and theory has been set within specific contents which should enable students to determine the relationship between theory and practice. A very 'practical' text. I really do like this series of publications! --Practice learning coordinator, University of Hull

Many students struggle to understand certain theories and in particular to relate them to their practice. This book will be a valuable tool in enabling them to understand how theory can and should confirm practice. --Lecturer, Bangor University
