Skills, Training and Human Resource Development This book focuses on the way people are developed at work; the skills that are encouraged, the way they are controlled and the implications they have for the people who possess and exercise them. Taking a critical perspective, "Skill, Training and Human Resource Development" draws on a wide range of research and covers an array of organizational practices - from managing culture and emotional labour to job design and qualifications - and adeptly considers the implications of these for the people involved.

I really enjoyed writing this book. Far too many texts in
this area treat training as an activity that occurs in isolation and is
somehow discrete from the jobs that people do, the way they are managed or
the experience they bring to their work. Here, drawing on the best
international research I have tried to correct that. Skills, training and
HRD are located in the workplace and considered as part of work.
I have also taken account of the revolutionary shift in the jobs people do
and the massive rise of service sector work. For many, work now involves
emotions, appearance and presentation, cultures are there to be 'managed'
and 'skills' are social ones.
The book is a comprehensive one. It covers the nature of skill (and how
this is changing), training, the effects of work and workplaces, British
institutions and initiatives such as Investors in People and NVQs,
International practices, emotion work and emotional labour, managing
culture, knowledge and knowledge work, managerial work and leadership. It
engages with these critically and sets optimistic predictions against real
workplace practice. I hope that students of HRM and HRD will find it
interesting, informative and useful.
