Synopsis
After thirty year careers in the computer business, the Rothmans volunteered to consult in the developing world. The initial two-year project in Thailand led to assignments in 16 countries and extended travel. "The World Out There" represents a distillation of what they learned about themselves, the countries and cultures. The book describes how the work began and changed as information technology changed, how original perceptions of America changed, how the essentials of living and avoiding harm were managed, how the importance and frustration of foreign aid affected the work, and if it is possible to "go home again."

Stanley Rothman (1927-2011) was director of the Center for the Study of Social and Political Change and was Mary Huggins Gamble Professor Emeritus of Government at Smith College.
