Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details an important advancement in the production of steel mid-way through the industrial revolution: the Bessemer process. Originally, steel could only be made from wrought iron by a process called cementation, but the invention by Henry Bessemer of a process by which molten iron could be decarbonized revolutionized steel production. The Bessemer process worked well for most iron ores, which typically contain acidic impurities. However, when ores containing phosphorus were used, the steel was brittle and useless for most structural purposes. In this book, the author details his work to solve this problem, by inventing a basic lining for the Bessemer converter. This advancement allowed steel to be made from nearly all iron ores and was pivotal in expanding the structural uses of steel, which up to this point had been limited to wrought iron. By refining the work of previous pioneers and conducting his own insightful research, the author created a new steelmaking process that played a major role in the industrial revolution.
