This immense holding the Commander kept until about 1858, when he and another large owner in the area divided their lands into small tracts and sold them at public auction. Further subdivisions of this land were made in the early 1860's, when de mands by the people for land in the area were stimulated by an increase in the demand for and price of rubber, which developed during these years.
