Melchior Lechter ist der Meister der reinen mystischen Kunst. Er selber spricht das in aller Deutlichkeit aus auf dem Kataloge seiner ersten Ausstellung in Berlin. So ist der Künstler mit dem heiligen Amt eines Priesters begnadet im Tempel der Schönheit, aus dessen Grundvesten der mystische Quell emporströmt und aus dessen Sternenwolbung die mystische Rose herniederleuchtet. Der mystischen Kunst aber haftet keineswegs, wie aus der kunstfeindlichen großen Menge hie und da verlautet, irgend etwas Verschrobenes, Erklügeltes oder Absonderliches an, sie ist vielmehr reine und höchste Idealkunst, Seelenkunst, welche wie die Religion und wohl auch die Philosophie das Unfaßbare und Göttliche dem Gefühl anzu nähern trachtet. Weitab liegt die mystische Kunst von den Bestrebungendes Occultismus, ja, man könnte von ihr sagen, daß sie die Kunst an sich ware, An fang und Ende aller Kunst, welche aus allen Tiefen zu allen Hohen die goldenen Fä den Spinnt und den Regen bogen von der Erde zum Himmel schlagt als die Brucke der zum Schöpfer heimkeh renden Seele. Die Apotheose des rein Menschlichen aber ist zu allen Zeiten das Ziel und der Inbegriff der großen Kunst gewesen. Und namentlich die Symbole der mystischen Kunst, der Quell, die Rose, der Engel, der Sanger oder Priester, sind von Alters her überliefert, und so hält auch Lechter streng auf das ortho doxe Dogma seiner Kunst. Neue Stoffe erfinden zu wollen ist ein Unding. Seit den Ur anfängen der Menschheit sind die Wahrheit, die Schönheit, die Liebe die unverrückbaren Leitsterne alles Gestaltens. Nur die Form erneuert sich von Geschlecht zu Ge schlecht, Form aber ist In begriff, die schone Form die Seele des Alls, die Form die Inkarnation des Traumes, die Form ist Gott, ein Gott an sich ist undenkbar und unmöglich, also ist der Kosmos Gott.
