Die Bemessung von Bauteilen kann entweder rein erfahrungsgemäß auf Grund des natürlichen statischen Gefühls und in Anlehnung an bereits bestehende Bauwerke erfolgen oder unmittelbar durch Bestimmung der Abmessungen mittels der Theorie. Der erste Weg führte im Altertum und im Mittelalter zur Ausbildung der Ingenieurkunst, wobei das Wissen nur auf Erfahrung beruhte, sich von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht vererbte und mit der Kultur eines Volkes oft auch wieder verloren ging. Durch Beobachtung und Nachahmung der Natur wurden die wichtigen Grund formen des Balkens und der Kragträger für die Holzbauten sowie des Gewölbes für die Steinbauten ausgebildet und durch Beachtung der Fehler an nicht standfesten Bauwerken fortschreitend verbessert. Die bewunderns werten Bauten der Römer, die zum Teil heute noch bestehen, wie z. B. Die 36 rn weit gespannte Brücke über den Tajo bei Alcantara sowie das Pantheon in Rom mit einer Kuppel von 40 m Lichtweite, zeigen, welche hohe Stufe der Baukunst selbst bei dem nur auf Erfahrung fußenden Entwerfen erreicht werden kann.
