La prima parte di essa riguarda a' tempi più lontani, quando cioè il nome di Ferrara non si sa che ancora esi stesse, e contiene le notizie che restano del primitivo stato della nostra provincia. Esse son poche; ma gl' indovinamen ti e le favole aggiunte loro dalla riscaldata immaginazione degli smoderati amatori dell'antichità e dal fanatismo degli acrittori di due o tre secoli fa, di nobilitare ad ogni costo le origini de' luoghi sono tali e tante, che il separarlo dal vero richiede lungo discorso. Que' medesimi scrittori suppo sero ne' posteri un cosi dolce temperamento da aver a cre tutto alla cieca. Ma noi ce ne vendichiamo abbastanza 001 non ammettere so non se appena quello che fu a' gior ni loro, e quello che nel rimanente resta d'altronde a suf Scienza provato. Non gli sprezziamo perù, ma protittiamo del buono che ci ban lasciato e nel resto siam grati al lo ro buon volere.
