Diss um so mehr als einigen der auswärtigen Bearbeitungen dac lateinische Gedioht Walthers von Chatillon (zwischen 1176 und 1201 zu Grunde liegt dessen Vorbild der alten Welt näher stund. Eine Menge von Arbeiten sind schon über diesen Gegenstand crachiemn sehr gelehrte Männer haben die verschiedenen Quellen und die Anfângc von Alexanders Geschichte besprochen; andere haben sich mit der Ueberlieferung, in ihrem Verhältnis zu den verschiedenen Vôlkern ben denen sie nach und nach heimisch wurde beschäftigt; noch andre haben ihren Fleiss auf das Gedioht se]bor gewendet. Aber ungeachtet all dieser Arbeiten und Untersuchungen sind doch noch eine Menge Fragen ungelôst, oder nur unvollständig beantwortet. Sie hier alle zu erledigen machen wir uns keine Hofl'nung weil wir die Herausgabe einer der Bearbeitungen des Gedichtes nur als einen Beitrag weiter ansehen. Indessen hat uns doch diese Arbeit so unvollkommen sie ist einige Belege geliefert die kûnftighin wenn auch nicht die Frage vollstîmdig aufhcllen, so doch mit andern zusammengeüellt, cin wenig mehr Licht auf sie werfen kônnen.
