About the Author

Katie Barclay is Deputy-Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in the History of Emotions, and Associate Professor in History at the University of Adelaide, Australia.; Katie Barclay is Senior Lecturer in the ARC Centre of Excellence in the History of Emotions and Department of History, University of Adelaide, Australia. Her monograph, Love, Intimacy and Power: Marriage and Patriarchy in Scotland, 1650-1850 (Manchester University Press, 2011), won both the Senior Hume Brown Prize in Scottish History and Women’s History Network (UK) Book Prize. She has written widely on the role of emotions in family life, not least love. Her essay on love and friendship between lower order Scottish men, in Revisiting Gender in European History, 1400-1800, ed. Åsa Karlsson Sjogren, Elise M Dermineur, Virginia Langum, won the Royal Historical Society’s 2018 David Berry Prize. She has considerable editorial experience, including with Deborah Simonton et al, The Routledge History Handbook of Gender and the European Experience (Routledge, 2017), and with Bronwyn Reddan, The Feeling Heart in Medieval and Early Modern Europe (MIP, 2019). With Andrew Lynch and Giovanni Tarantino, she edits the journal, Emotions: History, Culture, Society. Her latest monograph, Men on Trial: Emotion, Embodiment and Identity in Ireland, 1800-1845 (Manchester University Press, 2019) is out in November.
