Synopsis

While there are a range of guides to dissertation writing aimed at university students studying arts, humanities and social sciences subjects, those who are undertaking dissertations in science have very few resources to rely on. Research projects and dissertations in science subjects are, on the whole, structurally and stylistically different to arts and humanities dissertations because they often serve a different purpose: to demonstrate a practical application rather than a theoretical enquiry. Scientific academic writing is much more passive, objective and evidence based than writing in the arts which is often written in a much more active voice and is based on logical argument.

This book will fill this gap in the market by guiding undergraduate and Masters students through the entire process of working on a dissertation, from the early but crucial planning stages, through to undertaking practical work and collecting data, researching literature, and writing up one’s findings. It contains a wealth of practical information which will help readers to approach their research in a focused and efficient manner. The first chapter looks as using marking criteria to get the best possible grades: this is something a lot of students would otherwise miss. It also contains a chapter on how to work effectively with one’s supervisor so that readers can better judge when to work independently and how and when to seek advice. Many students worry that they will accidentally fall foul of plagiarism, perhaps through poor referencing practice. The book dedicates a chapter to this topic so that readers can implement practices which will ensure they don’t break the rules.
