En France ce n'est que dans les premières années du dix - huitième siècle qu'il commence à être question des coif feurs, à part et en dehors des barbiers et des perruquiers. Les grands seigneurs avant cette époque chargeaient leurs valets de chambre du soin de leur tête; les grandes dames les confiaient à leur femme de chambre. Le reste du genre humain, hommes et femmes, était condamné à passer par les mains du perruquier, qui avait fait son temps et qui vieillissait à vue d'oeil. Un bon procès en règle est intenté en 1769 aux coiffeurs par les perruquiers les nouveaux venus le gagnent; et les premiers occupants ne se sont point relevés du coup, tandis que la fortune de leurs glorieux ri vaux n'a fait que grandir.
