Pour s'assurer, d'ailleurs, que notre travail n'est rien moins qu'un abrégé du Moniteur, il suffira de lui comparer nos livres; on verra qu'ils en diffèrent beaucoup, et osons ajouter, qu'ils sont autrement complets. Il nous a été assez difficile de composer toute la portion de notre histoire qui précède le 14 juillet. Avant cette époque en effet il n'y a point de journaux indépendans sauf le journal des États - Généraux qui ne s'occupe que de l'assemblée. Nous n'avons rien pu extraire ni de la Gazette, ni du Journal de Paris ni du Mercure de France. Ces feuilles parlent le moins qu'elles peuvent de ce qui se passe en les lisant on croirait que la révolution est un rêve. Il nous a donc fallu recourir aux brochures. La plupart imprimées en secret sont sans date. Nous en avons consulté, certainement, beaucoup plus d'un millier. Nous en avons extrait ce qu'on lira.
