Excerpt from A Concise English History
Very little is known of Britain before its invasion by Julius Caesar, who, having subdued the tribes that occupied Gaul, determined to make a descent on Britain. He desired to add the island to his con quests, as he had heard from the Gallic merchants that it was a fine and fertile country.
According to the latest researches Caesar landed near Hythe He found the country ruled by a number of petty princes who were constantly making war on each other, but now united to oppose the invader. But their undisciplined troops were no match for the Roman legions.
