Der am längsten bekannte Texteszeuge für I. Clem. Ist der Codex Alexandrinus, die griechische Bibel enthaltend. Seine Geschichte ist in den Hauptzügen bekannt. Er ist höchst wahr scheinlich in Agypten entstanden, Wie aus einzelnen Buchstaben, die die ägyptische Form der griechischen Uncialen aufweisen, zu entnehmen ist. Dem Inhaltsverzeichnisse auf dem ersten Blatte des Codex ist in arabischer Sprache eine Bemerkung beigefügt, die behauptet, der Codex sei von der Hand der Märtyrerin Thekla geschrieben, eine Behauptung, die im lateinischen Begleitschreiben des Cyrill, das ebenfalls dem ersten Bande des Codex vor geheftet ist, noch etwas ausführlicher wiederholt wird. Wenn dieser Tradition irgendwelche Beachtung zu schenken ist, so wird vielleicht aus ihr zu schliessen sein, dass der Codex in einem Kloster der heiligen Thekla in welchem, ist ungewiss geschrieben wurde.
