Les familles dépossédées du trône s'enfuyaient, al laient chercher refuge dans une contrée éloignée ou dans une province qui leur restait fidèle. L'islamisme, dans son libéralisme, n'avait pas éteint les particularismes locaux chez les peuples soumis et convertis. En même temps, a la faveur des rivalités et des luttes affaiblissantes, les gouverneurs des provinces éloignées fondaient des dynasties d'abord vassales, rapidement indépendantes.
