The presence Of water in Volcanic Eruptions is another subject on which a difference Of Opinion as to its origin and effects, exists. The cause Of the vast escape Of steam from Volcanoes has been held to be due to steam held or. Occluded, wholly or in great part, in the lava in the Volcanic foci. The Object Of the fourth Article is to show on the 'con trary that lava in the Volcanic foci does not contain occluded water, but that the 'waters which give rise, as well to the escape of steam as to explosions, are surface waters, which in their descent come in contact with the lava in the duct of the volcano as it approaches the surface.
