Excerpt from The Non-Dramatic Works of Hrosvitha: Text, Translation, and Commentary; Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Saint Louis University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
The dramas of the Nun of Gandersheim have brought her well-merited fame, and their reproduction upon the modern stage has met with some success. Yet her legends and epics, charming and unique as they are in their very simplicity, have been allowed to pass into oblivion, at least by English and American scholars. Hence arose my interest in her non-dramatic works. Added to this is the considera tion that Hrosvitha is but another product of those dark ages, an epithet which modern prejudice has, until of late, undeservedly bestowed upon all or portions of the mediaeval era.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of six religious dramas written in prose by the tenth-century nun and playwright Hrosvitha. The plays, which were written as moral lessons for her fellow nuns, feature all-female casts and draw inspiration from both Christian and pagan sources. The author intertwines elements of comedy, tragedy, and morality, exploring themes of faith, chastity, and the power of women. By basing her dramas on biblical stories and the lives of saints, Hrosvitha brings these historical and religious figures to life, offering a unique perspective on the role of women in the early Church. Through her engaging and thought-provoking plays, Hrosvitha challenges societal norms and provides a valuable lens through which to examine the religious and social climate of her time.
