This book is a reprint of Lectures which have already appeared in the Joninal of Anatomy and Physiology, and which, as unterian Professor, I had the honour to deliver in March 1887 at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. NO alteration has been made in them, except that a few clerical errors have been corrected. I have to tender my thanks to the Editors of the Journal Of Anatomy and Physiology for their liberalit)7 in publishing and illustrating these investigations.
