Excerpt from A Study of Calorimetric Methods: Together With a Critical Study of the Peroxide Calorimeter
Very little was done in this line until 1845, when the two French investigators, Favre and Silbermann, constructed the first oxygen calorimeter. Their researches extended over a very large territory and many of the heat values obtained by them are accepted today. Their work, however, was mostly on the elementary substances.(2)

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, a record of extensive research, focuses on the determination of heat values in the combustion of various substances. The author begins with a brief history of the many methods for determining heat values, referencing some of the pioneers in the field and their techniques. The book then presents an in-depth description of a method developed by the author utilizing a peroxide, referred to as the peroxide method. The author provides a detailed account of the conditions necessary for the most intense oxidation, as well as the specific chemical reactions involved in the combustion of different classes of substances. The book includes a study of the absorption of water and carbon dioxide by the chemicals used in the process, and data on the heat of formation of nitric acid, a byproduct of the combustion. The book concludes with the author's findings on the heat values of various substances, including foods, fuels, and oils. This book is significant for providing a detailed and accurate account of the peroxide method for determining heat values, and for its contribution to the understanding of the combustion of various substances.
