Der gehobene Ton erklärt sich einmal daraus, daß die Abhandlung ursprüng lich als Rede niedergeschrieben wurde; dann aber auch aus meiner unerschütterlichen Überzeugung, daß das behandelte Problem nicht nur ein Zentralprob lem der Gegenwart ist, sondern auch vom deutschen Drama nicht länger übersehen werden kann, wenn anders es nicht in gestaltungsunfähiger Geiühlsduselei und romantischem Nebeldunst endgültig zugrunde gehen will.
