Some 10 years ago the Bureau of Standards published an. Account of an investigation of the subject Optical pyrometry, 1 in which were stated the principles involved in the measurement of high temperatures by Optical methods and descriptions given of the instruments then in use, together with certain applications.
In the 'meantime there has been a marked development in the construction of instruments designed for the measurement Of tem perature, based ou the use of the total radiation from hot sub stances. It is the Object of the present paper to give an account Of the principles of radiation pyrometry, considering mainly the various types of radiation instruments, their calibration, sources Of error, including the various factors which may influence their indications, and their adaptability to the measurement of tempera tures.
