Excerpt from The Behavior of Brook Trout Embryos From the Time of Hatching to the Absorption of the Yolk Sac
Although certain senses of mature fishes have been carefully studied, little work:has been done upon the reactions of embryos. The investigations of the adult fish have been made chiefly with reference to the senses of smell, taste, sight, and hearing. Herrick found that some fishes possess taste buds located in the skin, by which they habitually discover their food, while other fishes have the sense of taste confined to the mouth.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details the embryonic development of brook trout, from hatching to the absorption of their yolk sac, based on observations of hundreds of individual fish across various stages of development. The author chronicles the gradual development of sensory responses in young trout, including reactions to mechanical stimuli such as touch and current, as well as their responses to light and carbon dioxide. The book also examines the development of feeding reactions in young trout, and how their behavior shifts from protective instincts when they are young and vulnerable, to exploratory and aggressive behaviors as they mature. The author concludes that the insights gained from this study help us better understand the environmental needs and behaviors of young brook trout, which is essential for their conservation and management.
