Excerpt from British Standard Specification for Keys and Keyways
The question of standardising Keys and Keyways was brought before the Main Committee in June, 1906, and was referred to the sub-committee on Rolled and Drawn Sections for use in Automatic Machines for their report. As a result the formation of a separate sub-committee to deal with'the question was recommended, and the appointment of this sub-committee was confirmed by the Main Committee on July 26th, 1906.
In drawing up their specification and in laying down margins of manufacture for Steel Key Bars the sub-committee have largely relied on the evidence previously obtained from Manufacturers by the sub-committee on Rolled and Drawn Sections for use in Automatic Machines.
Before issuing any recommendations as to Standard proportions for Key Sections, the sub-committee have investigated the merits of the many existing formulae, and consulted a number of engine builders and others on this subject. They have further thought it desirable to confirm their decisions by experimental investigation, and availed themselves of Mr. P. Ransom's kind offer to undertake this research at the works of the Unbreakable Pulley and Mill Gearing Co., at Manchester.
