It provides a historical survey of the methods and instruments used in measuring the reflection factor of surfaces, discussing the theory of the infinite luminous plane in connection with the Nutting absolute reflectometer. It also notes recent suggestions for the use of the Ulbricht sphere and describes several new ways of using it. One of these methods is described in detail and has been implemented as a reflectometer, which is a combination of the sphere with the Martens polarization photometer. By screening the test surface from the reflected light, this comparison directly gives the unknown reflection factor. The theory of this use of the sphere is given in full. The reflection factor of a block of magnesium carbonate is shown to be 98.7% by means of this instrument. A transmission meter based on the same theory is also described. The author points out that the spectral reflection and transmission factors may be obtained in this way, which would be a step toward standardization of methods. The author also describes a simpler and less expensive reflectometer that will enable one to obtain the reflection factor of surfaces within 10 to 15%. The book concludes with a general overview of methods of measuring reflection and transmission factors, and on standards.
