Excerpt from Testimony Given Before the Committee of Inquiry on the Charges Exhibited by John Wurtz, Against the Secretary of the Commonwealth
Grossewdmzjned by Wurtz. I received none but the one letter on that subjefit from Sergeant - My recollection, that after I re ceive'd the letter; I saw Steel first. Jennings said, that the governor had mentioned his son tohim be'spoke of it, that is, of the governor's son, but I did not understand him that the arrange ment Was actually made - Did not tell Steel, that his appointment would be jeopardized by refusing to take fox-did express my fears to Jennings, that he might by the conflict, between him and Lisle-i - 'don't say that I did not say he might jeopardise his com: mission by iefusing to take Fox. I did feel anxious, not for Fox, but from the conflict of these assertions which I feared - Men tioned the terms of Fox's agreement'with Lisle to Jennin's - I at that time said it Was a transaction which I disapproved hink I mentioned this to him - l principally intended to convince Har per, that I had been uniformly in favor of Mr. Wurtz. These Conversations took piacc,i think, before the commissions came down, and before] had a,knowledge of the whole transactions: You, Wurtz, thought it your duty to inform me, that if Lisle were appointed,and remained in office; thati should apprize Sergeant of your'intention to bring the matter before the legislature Never showed the letter but to one man, until after the Iate investigation u - Never expressed an apprehension that Sergeant would burn the letter if placed in his hands - Terms ofthe letter made me say Tom was energetic, because Inever before received such a letter from him. Sergeant Was daily complained of to me for not inter fefing and procuring appointments for those who interested them selves in his appointment Did not know Samuel Fox's charac ter until after this business - Heard individuals speaking, some for and some against him. Don't know who carried the notices to the auctioneers.
