Excerpt from A Hand-Book to the Flora of Ceylon, Vol. 4: Containing Descriptions of All the Species of Flowering Plants Indigenous to the Island, and Notes on Their History, Distribution, and Uses; Euphorbiaceæ Naiadeæ, With Plates LXXVI-C
In addition to the above, I propose to give in Part V. (i), a key to the Natural Orders of Ceylon Flowering plants, without which the work cannot be of practical use to any but experienced botanists; brief biographical notices, by G. Boulger, Esq., Of the botanists who have done mo'st for the advancement of the Sinhalese Flora; two very instructive Maps, of the Rainfall and Of the Forest Areas of Ceylon, issued by the surveyor-general of the Colony, to whom I am greatly indebted for sanctioning this use of them.
Regarding Indexes, it will be observed that a complete Index of the Latin, Sinhalese, and Tamil names of the plants described in Parts I. And II. Is appended to Part II. Part III. Is not indexed. As I propose to append to Part V. A complete Index to the whole work, I have con fined the Index to Parts III. And IV. To generic names.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details the over 500 species of Euphorbiaceae found in the South Asian island nation of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The author, a renowned botanist of the 19th century, includes extensive descriptions, organized by genus, and provides a comprehensive catalogue of the family's representation on the island. He begins with a thorough introduction to the characteristics unique to the family, and includes subcategories that allow readers to identify the various genera and species present in Ceylon. With meticulous detail, individual entries contain descriptions of male and female flowers along with fruit types, and are further divided into sections based on leaf shape, stem characteristics, and reproductive structures, concluding with a treatment of anomalous characteristics. An appendix details species introduced to the island by humans, and there are several plates illustrating the diversity of Euphorbiaceae found on the island.
