This book provides an exploration of the constitution, discipline, unity, and worship of the early Christian church, with a focus on the role of the bishop. The author begins by discussing the condition of the world as a state of heathenism at the time of Christ's ministry. The author traces the practices with respect to many points that have been unfortunately controverted among us. The book gives an account of how the apostles planted churches, then appointed the first converts to be bishops thereof. The book claims there was only one bishop in a church at first, and that the title, as well as the authority of the bishop, came from Christ. This and a multitude of other topics are covered with great depth and insight throughout this book.
