Excerpt from The Worth of the Old Testament: A Sermon Preached in St. Paul's Cathedral on the Second Sunday in Advent, December 8, 1889
The call for a second edition of this sermon affords an opportunity for noticing some observa tions, chiefly private, that have been made on one portion of it.
It is asked why the critical discussion of the historical and moral worth of the Old Testament cannot proceed without any reference to our Lord's authority at all. Criticism, it is urged, handles only questions with which He was not concerned, and upon which He passes no judgment.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the complex relationship between Christianity and the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. Despite acknowledging its trustworthiness, the author argues that some of its stories can now be known to be untrue according to historians, yet still insists that it should be considered a book above criticism. The author challenges modern destructive academic opinions and asserts that accepting the Bible as the infallible word of God is essential to Christian faith. They argue that Jesus Himself sanctioned the Old Testament, treated it as an authority above discussion, and went out of His way to emphasize its importance. The author even goes so far as to suggest that doubting the historical worth of the Old Testament is akin to doubting the trustworthiness of Jesus Himself. While the arguments presented may not be universally accepted, this book provides a starting point for a necessary examination of the role the Old Testament should play in the faith of modern Christians.
