Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the origins of comic opera from its roots in ancient theatrical traditions such as the Atellan Fables. The author argues that the genre emerged due to a desire for realism and the inclusion of "low" comedic elements within opera seria. While the form was initially associated with improvisation, it gradually became codified with established character types and plots. The author traces the development of comic opera across the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. By focusing on Naples as the birthplace of the genre, the author presents a detailed analysis of the Neapolitan school's influence on the maturing art form. The author highlights key works by composers such as Orazio Vecchi and Francesco Cirillo, offering musical examples to illustrate the evolution of the genre. The author concludes that Neapolitan comic opera provided the foundation for the flourishing of the genre throughout Europe. Its influence on the works of Pergolesi and others laid the groundwork for the development of modern comic opera and its enduring popularity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781333940454_0
