Excerpt from Recollections of My Life, Vol. 1 of 3
A year has elapsed since the mournful tragedy of Queretaro closed the career of one of the most gifted, genial, and chivalrous of princes; of one who seemed destined, by his liberal and enlightened policy, to develop the wonderful resources of a great empire, and to advance the cause of civilisation over the world. This was not to be; betrayed by his trusted officer into the hands of his ruthless enemies, nothing but his blood would satisfy them, and Mexico will probably again fall into the same anarchy from Which she might have been rescued by Maximilian.
The public will feel an additional interest from his sad fate in the following graphic account of the voyages and travels of this estimable prince.
The work was not originally intended for publication, and only fifty copies were struck off at the Geheime Staatsdruckerei' (privy state printing-office) in Vienna.
