Although we cannot at present put our hands upon the original Latin text from which the version before us was made, it is quite evident that there is very little that is original about it. How could there be The author was treating on subjects that were as old as the Christian church, and giving directions how priests with little book learning or experience were to teach the faith to their flocks. Great numbers of independent works of this nature were produced in the Mid dle Ages. There is probably not a language or dialect in Europe that has not now, or had not once, several treatises of this nature among its early literature. The growth of languages, the Reformation, and the alteration in Clerical education, consequent on that great revolution, have caused a great part of them to perish or become forgotten.
