Excerpt from Rome, the Middle of the World
Of the friendly encouragement given to me by several successful teachers of children, in schools and at home, who seem to have thought well of my previous attempt to make some historical persons and incidents appeal to children's imagination. It will be observed, however, that this is only in a very general sense a sequel to my Friends of the Olden Time. In style it is adapted to the understanding Of young people who Six or seven years ago may have followed, without a feeling of outraged dignity, our rambles and chats in the ancient world. The biographical character of treatment has been partially abandoned for the dramatic.
