So war alles aufs schönste geordnet und der Wettkampf schien durchaus gesichert zu sein, da trat eine höhere Macht hindernd da zwischen. Ich erlitt im Januar des folgenden Jahres einen Unfall auf dem Eise, der mich für geraume Zeit kampfunfähig machte; ich fuhr daher im März zu Lasker nach Borlin und hat ihn, den Wettkamfi auf das nächste Jahr zu verschieben. Er ging jedoch darauf nicht ein, sondern erklärte mir, wenn der Wettkampf nicht zur verabredeten Zeit stattfinden könne, dann sei eben der abgeschlossene Vertrag ungültig und ich müsse ihn später aufs neue herausfordern. Somit war dieser Versuch gescheitert.
