Excerpt from The Evidence for Communication With the Dead
With regard to the problem which is the subject of the present book, the world of to-day stands divided into two sharply defined factions. There are those who feel convinced that a communication with the dead exists, and those who - ii they have given a thought to the matter at all - consider it all but insane to assume such a com munication. The former group consists of the believing spiritualists, who without much criticism accept most things that purport to be messages from the departed; but it includes withal men and women who regard psychical research as a science, and cultivate it in a scientific manner. Of the latter and much larger group, it may on the whole be said that its members know little or nothing about the question as a rule, those who have occupied themselves with it have left the standpoint described above. After a thorough and honest study of the subject, only a very few have maintained their original opinion.
