That the history should be extraordinary is not surprising, for some of the physical features of the country are out of the common order. A few brooks of water are there, but only one river; a river of greater interest than the mighty waters which irrigate vast continents, and carry on their bosom the com merce of empires; a river flowing down its tortuous bed in the greatest depression of the earth's crust to the Dead Sea, which has no outlet but the clouds of heaven.
