Excerpt from Retaining-Walls for Earth: Including the Theory of Earth-Pressure as Developed From the Ellipse of Stress; With an Appendix Presenting the Theory of Prof. Weyrauch
Tee first edition of this work was based upon the theory advanced by Prof. Weyrauch in 1878, but owing to the length of the demonstrations used by him, it was thought advisable to present different and shorter demonstrations in this edition. To show that the new demonstrations give identical results with those obtained by Prof. Weyrauch, his demonstrations have been given in an appendix as they appeared in the first edition.
The new demonstrations are based upon the theory first advanced by Prof. Rankine in 1858. Those readers who are familiar with Rankine's Ellipse of Stress can omit pages 27 to 35, inclusive, in following the demonstrations.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a method for calculating the pressure of earth against retaining walls, by considering the earth as a granular mass without cohesion. The formulas and theorems presented have been verified with those of Professor Weyrauch, and tables of values have been added to simplify their use in practice. The general case of earth with an inclined surface and back of wall is analyzed and further simplified for special cases of horizontal earth surface and vertical walls. It includes an analysis of the abutting power of earth. This book provides an accurate and detailed exploration of earth pressure, making it an invaluable resource for civil engineers and other professionals in the field.
