The first investigator to develop a successful method for the determina tion of transference numbers was W. Hittorf. (pagg. Ann 89, 177 In this work an electrolytic cell was used in which a strip of silver always served as cathode and a metal which corresponded to'the metal ion of the electrolyte as anode. The transference numbers were calculated from the change in concentration around the anode which resulted from the passage of a measured quantity of electricity. This method was improved in many respects by him during the next few years and, as finally used, was the same in all essentials as the present Hittorf method.
