Excerpt from An Abridgment of the Exposition of the Creed
Faith. Since then, indeed, the Scrip: ture-prophecies from which he has de monfirated the Bleifed jefas to be the Meflias, have been denied to be appli cable to him by any Rules of Logical Reafoning; that which the jaws in ge neral never had the hardinefs to object, has been alferted by thofe, who pretend to plead their caufe, but at the fame time depreciate, and ridicule the Oracles of the Mofi High: and openly declare that no Meflias was promifed by their Prophets, or expe5'ted by that Nation, till about the time of our Lord's appear ance in the fleih: That the paffages in which we conclude he was defcribed, and the time and circumftances of his appearance were revealed, in order to prepare the way for his reception, cannot bear fuch a fenfe as we fix upon them, in their literal acceptation. If the Texts which have been appealed to, had not been commonly interpreted of the Meflias, both long before, and upon the coming of our Saviour; it had been unaccountable Stu pidity in the yewifla Rabbins to admit.
