Excerpt from The Position and Course of the South
IF history teaches any one lesson more emphatically than another, it is, that political institutions are never destroyed by influences fo1eign to tliemselves. Wherever, the1eforc in the h1st01 y of government, there have been two contending classes, the success of the one has been achieved by the inconsistency of the other. The reformation was begun by a Catholic Priest. The feudal system was destroyed by absolute monaichs. The 1evolution of 1688 was the wolk of the Whig aristoc racy, as was the reform bill of a later period - and the French revolution, so often misquoted, was the joint labour of infidel Priests and democrat nobles.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a powerful and impassioned argument for Southern secession from the United States in the years following the Compromise of 1850. Written by a Southerner deeply concerned by the increasing power of the North in the federal government, the author explores the fundamental differences between the North and South in terms of their political systems, economic interests, and social structures. He argues that the North, with its emphasis on free labor, is fundamentally opposed to the Southern way of life, which is built upon slavery. He further contends that the Northââ â¢s growing power in national politics threatens the Southââ â¢s ability to protect its institutions and its interests. The book challenges the idea of a united nation, arguing that the North and South are too different to coexist peacefully within a single political framework. It presents a vision of a new Southern Confederacy, independent and free to chart its own course, both domestically and internationally. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the tensions that would ultimately lead to the Civil War, and it provides a compelling voice for the Southern perspective on the issues that divided the nation.
