I have throughout endeavoured to keep on strictly historical ground, and to describe the different social, political and religious phenomena with the impartiality of an unbiassed observer. I should have been guilty of gross' neglect had I not attempted, step by step, to trace, in connection with Historiography, the causes 'of which the historical phenomena were the effects.
