A graduate of West Point, Sherman served in the regular army until 1853 when he resigned to become a banker in San Francisco. After several years as a lawyer and an educator, in 1859 he was appointed superintendent of a military academy in Louisiana. The outbreak of the Civil War found Sherman aligned with the Union, and he soon rose to the rank of colonel. He commanded a brigade in the battle of Bull Run, and later served in the Western Theater under Ulysses S. Grant. Sherman's aggressive tactics and brilliant leadership were instrumental in the Union victory at the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Atlanta. After the war, Sherman served as Commanding General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1883. The author also discusses Sherman's views on politics, economics, and social issues, providing a comprehensive portrait of a complex and influential figure in American history.
