This work had its beginning in the fall of 1897, and is the result of suggestions and advice given by Doctor Oliver Peebles Jenkins of Stanford University. The writer is also under many obligations to Doctor Warren Plimpton Lombard of the Uni versity of Michigan, and to Doctor Thomas Dennison Wood, now of Columbia University.
